Actor Jussie Smollett, best known for playing Jamal Lyon in the TV drama Empire, has had all charges of lying to the Police, dropped.
Smollett, 36, was accused of lying to Police regarding a Hate Crime he reported against him in January 2019, when he stated that two white men with “MAGA” hats had attacked him in the early hours, tying a noose around his neck and pouring bleach onto him.
It was later said by the Police, that Smollett had lied about the attack and had instead, paid two Nigerian brothers to carry out the attack in a staged event, in order to promote his career and gain a pay rise.
Actor Jussie Smollett reported that the attackers shouted “This is MAGA country” – a reference to President Trump’s Make America Great Again slogan
Prosecutors in the case have given no indication as to why the charges have been dropped against Smollett, but have confirmed that an “appropriate resolution” has been achieved. They have also not stated if any further evidence has come to light since Smollett’s last court appearance.
Smollett’s Lawyers made a statement regarding the case, stating –
“Jussie was attacked by two people he was unable to identify on 29 January, he was a victim who was vilified and made to appear as a perpetrator as a result of false and inappropriate remarks made to the public causing an inappropriate rush to judgement.
“Jussie and many others were hurt by these unfair and unwarranted actions. This entire situation is a reminder that there should never be an attempt to prove a case in the court of public opinion. That is wrong.
“It is a reminder that a victim, in this case Jussie, deserves dignity and respect.
“Dismissal of charges against the victim in this case was the only just result.
“Jussie is relieved to have this situation behind him and is very much looking forward to getting back to focusing on his family, friends and career.”
There has been no comment from the FBI at this time.
